Surprises

Shoppers and traders, who I get to meet through the bazaar never cease to surprise me. Meet Dimi who made my jaw dropped, when he managed to solve the Rubik's cube in less than one minute, while we were chatting.

'Children of the 80s' or the '80s babies' would be familiar with the puzzle which was invented in 1974 by the Hungarian professor and sculptor, Erno Rubik. It was used as a teaching aid by the professor of architecture to explain geometric theory to his students. During the 1980s the Rubik’s Cube spawned a subculture of enthusiasts that formed clubs, organised competitions and watched cartoons all based on the puzzle.

Enough history ... lets stare in awe! :o)

Yong, a trader at the bazaar, volunteered to work his magic hands on my wrist watch that a shop outside claimed could no longer function. I was happy when it started ticking again and I only paid the battery cost!

Kelly's Handbags

Kelly has been with us for the past month and every single time, I'll have a tug of war with my conscience; to buy or not to buy. You can find quite a few stylo handbags in her selection and last weekend I had to really refrain myself from buying a Chloe-ish design handbag (only because I've bought 3 handbags earlier). Price starts at RM 25.

Colors are lively and bright and evocative of the garden; a rustic, textural quality permeates through the use of wood and iron. Gaz, formerly a cabin crew, brings interesting and unique collectibles acquired from his travelling to Bijou Bazaar.

Laila and Majnun have been characters for Sufi poets, as Krishna was for the poets of India.

The story of Laila and Majnun is one of the most popular in the Islamic world, enduring in legends, tales, poems, songs, and epics from the Caucasus to Africa and from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean. Laila and Majnun have always exerted a great fascination, for it is not only a love story, but a lesson in love. Not love as it is generally understood by man, but the love that rises above the earth and heavens.

The above photographed artworks are based on Laila and Majnun love story. The artist would sing 'The Song of Majnun' every time he attended to his work.

Alas the Persian artist perished in the 70s, during one of the Gulf Wars.

Jaipur's Odhni

Another micro retailer, Nahlah, has voiced her interest to be part of the Bijou Bazaar family - Nahlah specialises in 'odhni'.

(Don't worry, I scratched my head as well when I heard the word 'odhni'.)

Apparently, at the remote villages of Bihar, close to the India/Nepal border, men and women work at home on hand looms to create colourful fabrics, including the traditional scarves called 'odhni'. For centuries, young women have worn the simple garment as head scarves. The scarf, with its multiple stripes of royal blue, crimson, magenta, and teal, is a great lightweight travel piece, and can be used in various styles.

You can be creative and turn them into head scarves, belts, and anything your creative mind can think of. Oh! I like that challenge and I thought of them images when I heard the call:
